Abstract:Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn. (Liquorice) is a plant used as a traditional medicine from the ancient time. The dried roots of the plant are mainly used in the treatment for its cooling, demulcent, expectorant, emollient, laxative, stimulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic & antimicrobial properties. This review article is presented to compile all the updated information on its phytochemical and pharmacological activities, which were performed by widely different methods. Studies indicate Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn., possesses hepato-protective, anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-tussive and demulcent, Immunostimulatory, anti-diabetic, neuroprotective and anti-malarial activity. These results are very encouraging and indicate this herb should be studied more extensively to confirm these results and reveal other potential therapeutic effects. Clinical trials using Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn., for a variety of conditions should also be conducted.
